Three profiles were analyzed: one gray greenish colored (PV, La Victoria Formation; ~13.6–13.1 Ma) and two red colored (FRB and LVRB, Villavieja Formation; ~13.1–12.0 Ma). Mineralogical analyses (XRD/XRF) revealed a chemical disequilibrium in PV, with nontronite (a smectite) accumulation inconsistent with stability diagrams in the Al₂O₃-MgO-Na₂O-K₂O-SiO₂-H₂O systems. In contrast, FRB and LVRB profiles showed stable proportions of 1:1 and 2:1 phyllosilicates, coherent with equilibrium assemblages. Soil pH was reconstructed using geochemical proxies and integrated into thermodynamic models and mineral stability diagrams, enabling discrimination between in situ-formed and allochthonous clays (e.g., reworked volcanic ash). Additionally, Winogradsky column experiments and 8-month multispectral monitoring showed greater swelling and Fe+3 release in PV, suggesting nontronite degradation and microbially driven acidification. LVRB exhibited relative goethite stability and spectral changes linked to ferric iron release. These results demonstrate that thermodynamic equilibrium is a valuable tool to interpret the origin and transformation of clays in paleosols and to infer paleoenvironmental transitions between wetter and drier conditions during the Middle Miocene.eng
