| dc.description.abstract | Forensic genetic genealogy (FGG) has proven to be an effective tool for the identification of individuals in various contexts such as criminal investigations and body identification, facilitating the resolution of cases where traditional methods have proven insufficient. Its application is based on the use of publicly available genetic databases such as GEDmatch, which collects information from direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic tests voluntarily uploaded by people around the world. In Colombia, there is no history of its use, but more than 40,000 unidentified bodies in forensic medicine, raises the need for new tools to facilitate this work. In this context, the present project aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the GEDmatch genetic database in the identification of 10 Colombian individuals from the analysis of their genetic profiles obtained by DTC tests, in addition to performing a genetic characterization of the participants using GEDmatch’s ancestry tool. 50% of the individuals were identified, while 40% did not have relevant matches and therefore were not identified. The remaining 10% did not receive a response from those contacted. The ancestry analysis revealed that, despite having volunteers from different regions such as Cundinamarca and Atlántico, the results were very homogeneous, with Northeastern European populations and Neolithic Atlantic-Mediterranean populations predominating in all volunteers, followed by the Mesoamerican population. These findings suggest that GEDmatch has an under-representation of Colombian genetic profiles in its database, but despite this, it may constitute a supporting tool alongside traditional genealogy for the identification of unidentified bodies in Colombia. | eng |
