Several works about the variability of the Central American wind jets have been carried out since early twentieth century. Despite the consensus around the mechanisms that trigger them, there has not been an effort that systematically addresses the issue of its variability and activation mechanisms while taking into account both the short-term scale and the spatial delimitation of the jets. In addition to the above, the results in most cases have been based on a limited data record that prevents certainty in climatological terms. This work aims to describe the Central American wind jets in their different variability scales, as well as to explore their activation mechanisms, all from an event scale approach. A jet event catalog of almost 40 years, product of the implementation of a jet event identification algorithm, has allowed to know different subjects about them. It is shown that the Tehuantepec jet magnitude is stronger than the Papagayo and Panama jet magnitudes, opposite to the climatology of the wind according to which the Papagayo magnitude is the strongest. Papagayo jet vertical influence is more variable througout the year than the Tehuantepec and Panama ones. Changes in the horizontal influence regions of the wind jets are due to the magnitude and the direction of the jets during the different seasons of the year. In addition, cold front penetration into the tropics and westward movement of the North Atlantic Subtropical High are found to be related to different activation patterns of the wind jets. In winter season, a sequential activation of the Central American wind jets is triggered by the southward movement of cold fronts, whereas during summer the strengthening of the North Atlantic Subtropical High is related to the reinforcement of the pressure gradient through the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and over the Caribbean Sea.eng
