This paper uses a database corresponds to measurements made with a terrestrial lightning location network located in the country and owned by Vaisala, which in collaboration with the research group Electromagnetic Compatibility of the National University of Colombia (EMC-UN), recorded almost 80 million electromagnetic discharge measurements with temporal, geographic and electrical information, over a period of 5 years (2016-2020), for an approximate area of 700,000 km2 located between Latitudes 1◦ N and 8◦ N and Longitudes −77◦W and −70◦W, which corresponds to the Colombian central zone. The purpose of this work is to delve into the establishment of a detailed lightning climatology of the central region of Colombia, with the objective of expanding the knowledge about this phenomenon and contributing information to future studies and developments using the referred database and employing for this purpose data mining approaches to facilitate the tasks of processing and analysis of large volumes of data associated with lightning in the country. For this purpose the algorithms and methodology are created to allow the analysis, processing, and visualization of large volumes of data associated with atmospheric discharges, developing a detailed lightning climatology using the high level of temporal and geographical precision of the measurements and tools based on Python programming language in order to determine the existence of lightning occurrence patterns. | eng |
