This work focuses on providing technical resources for the proper selection of a dispersing agent aimed at universal pigment concentrates that are compatible in water-based and solvent-based coatings. The development of this work includes a classification of dispersing agents available in the Colombian market, and a characterization by infrared spectroscopy to make a first selection of dispersing agents that offer universal characteristics. In this first step, a modified polyester oligomeric dispersant and an AB block acrylic dispersant are selected. Once the functional groups are characterized, a 32 factorial design of experiments is carried out to determine the optimal pigment concentration and dispersant ratio. Finally, with the pigment concentrates formulated with the optimal ratio, stability and compatibility tests are carried out to determine the performance offered by the dispersing agent. The experimental data obtained shows that the oligomeric dispersant has greater compatibility in aqueous and solvent media than the acrylic dispersant.eng
