| dc.description.abstract | In this work, the optical properties of one-dimensional (1D) photonic crystals are studied, with emphasis on light transmission through multilayer materials. To this end, the transfer matrix method is employed, which allows for an accurate analysis of how light behaves as it passes through different media, while also accounting for the inherent disorder present in real materials. As a starting point, an ideal one-dimensional system composed of an infinite number of alternating layers of two materials with different refractive indices (air and glass) is modeled. Light transmission through the entire system is analyzed by applying the boundary conditions derived from Maxwell’s equations and Snell’s law at the interfaces. In configurations with multiple layers, the use of the matrix method becomes necessary, as it facilitates the treatment of multiple interfaces. This approach also enables the incorporation of light polarization effects in its transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes, allowing for a detailed calculation of the reflection and transmission coefficients, as well as the photonic band structure of the system. Finally, a complementary analysis of wave propagation is presented using a propagation matrix, which provides a simpler understanding of light behavior in both periodic and disordered structures. | eng |
