Resumen
Esta investigación aborda la construcción de identidades e imaginarios en torno al tango en la ciudad de Medellín, con especial énfasis en el impacto de la muerte de Carlos Gardel en 1935. Gardel, figura emblemática del tango, quien trascendió con su legado musical para convertirse en un símbolo cultural de gran relevancia para los aficionados al género en la ciudad. Su trágico fallecimiento en un siniestro aéreo no solo provocó un profundo luto colectivo, sino que también dio origen a un mito fundacional que consolidó la relación de Medellín con el tango. Este estudio examina cómo la figura de Gardel, pese a su ausencia física, continuó moldeando la cultura tanguera de la ciudad durante las décadas siguientes. A través del análisis de las transformaciones en los imaginarios asociados al tango, se busca comprender cómo estos han contribuido a la construcción de la identidad cultural de Medellín. Asimismo, se exploran las manifestaciones materiales de este legado, tales como la instalación de una estatua en su honor y la creación de espacios culturales dedicados a preservar la tradición tanguera, en el periodo comprendido entre 1935 y 1973. Abstract
This research addresses the construction of identities and imaginaries around tango in the city of Medellín, with special emphasis on the impact of the death of Carlos Gardel in 1935. Gardel, an emblematic figure of tango, who transcended his musical legacy to become a cultural symbol of great relevance for fans of the genre in the city. His tragic death in a plane crash not only caused deep collective mourning, but also gave rise to a founding myth that consolidated Medellín's relationship with tango. This study examines how the figure of Gardel, despite his physical absence, continued to shape the city's tango culture during the following decades. Through the analysis of the transformations in the imaginaries associated with tango, we seek to understand how these have contributed to the construction of Medellín's cultural identity. The material manifestations of this legacy are also explored, such as the installment of a statue in his honour and the creation of cultural spaces dedicated to preserving the tango tradition, in the period between 1935 and 1973.
