Regulación biótica del ciclo hidrológico en múltiples escalas

Abstract

El papel de la biota en el funcionamiento del sistema terrestre ha sido motivo de un amplio debate científico. No se discute la existencia de tal papel sino su entendimiento a profundidad y sus implicaciones. En este contexto se encuentra la idea de la regulación del medio ambiente por parte de la biota, o regulación biótica del medio ambiente; y enmarcada por esta idea se formula la pregunta que sirve como punto de partida para la presente tesis: ¿El ciclo hidrológico es regulado (no sólo afectado) por la biota? Cómo? Si bien esta es la pregunta de investigación planteada originalmente en el proyecto de tesis, el desarrollo de la investigación ha mostrado que conviene estudiar el papel de la biota en la regulación del sistema terrestre en general, más que en la del ciclo hidrológico en particular; entre otras razones porque los resultados sugieren que el Ciclo hidrológico no puede verse sólo como una consecuencia de la regulación del sistema terrestre Sino también como un factor que condiciona esa regulación. En síntesis, las ideas centrales que se tratan son: (i) que la biota juega un papel fundamental en la regulación del sistema terrestre; y (ii) que el ciclo hidrológico es un factor que condiciona significativamente tal regulación./Abstract: The role of the biota in the functioning of the Earth system has been a matter of scientific debate. It is not disputed the existence of such a role, but its deep understanding and implications. The idea of the regulation of the environment by the biota, or biotic regulation of the environment, arises in this context; and under this idea, the question that serves as the starting point for the present thesis is formulated: Is the hydrologic cycle regulated (not only affected) by the biota? How is that? Although this is the question originally proposed in the thesis project, the development of the research has shown that studying the role of the biota in the regulation of the overall Earth system is more convenient than focusing the study on the hydrologic cycle in particular. Among other reasons, this is because the results suggest that the hydrologic cycle should not only be viewed as a consequence of the regulation of the Earth system, but also as a factor controlling such regulation. In summary, the central ideas of the present thesis are: (i) that the biota plays a fundamental role in the regulation of the Earth system, and (ii) that the hydrologic cycle significantly affects such regulation.
