However, soil is a natural material that is inherently anisotropic and heterogeneous; therefore, even today its behavior is difficult to fully understand. This inherent anisotropy results from its composition and formation processes, leading to a directional dependence under loading—in other words, soil exhibits different responses depending on the direction in which the load is applied. Accordingly, this document presents a study on the influence of changes in the orientation of principal stresses on the strength properties of clay soils with high organic matter content, as a consequence of soil’s inherent anisotropy. A series of triaxial tests were carried out by varying the sample orientation in order to evaluate how anisotropy affects the undrained shear strength of soils: tests were performed on reconstituted kaolin samples and on kaolin samples with three different organic matter contents. It was found that the rotation of the principal stress has a greater impact on the strength of kaolin with organic matter content than on pure kaolin, showing a more pronounced reduction in strength. However, when the organic matter content was very high, the soil tended to behave in a more isotropic manner, indicating that the influence of anisotropy was only significant up to a certain level of organic matter.eng
