dc.description.abstract | Bajo las condiciones de tránsito, climáticas, geográficas y económicas que caracterizan a Colombia, la red vial primaria del país presenta una baja durabilidad, donde predominan pavimentos flexibles conformados por mezclas asfálticas densas que no satisfacen las exigencias operativas. Estas mezclas, además de su limitada vida útil, presentan deficiencias en términos de seguridad vial, contribuyendo a una alta tasa de accidentalidad, especialmente en escenarios de precipitación intensa. En el contexto internacional, se han desarrollado y aplicado soluciones como las mezclas asfálticas con matriz granular de soporte, del tipo Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA), las cuales se destacan por su estructura granular abierta, alta estabilidad y excelente desempeño mecánico. Estas propiedades las convierten en una alternativa prometedora para mejorar la durabilidad y seguridad de los pavimentos colombianos, especialmente en corredores sometidos a condiciones de alta carga y clima adverso. Este trabajo analiza la viabilidad técnica de las Mezclas Asfálticas con Matriz Granular de Soporte (MAMGS), considerando tres granulometrías SMA (19 mm, 12,5 mm y 9,5 mm). Se emplearon materiales colombianos: agregados pétreos, ligante asfáltico y fibras estabilizantes, suministrados por proveedores nacionales. Se llevaron a cabo ensayos de caracterización de materiales y pruebas de comportamiento mecánico para evaluar parámetros como estabilidad y flujo Marshall, resistencia al ahuellamiento, susceptibilidad a la humedad y escurrimiento de ligante, con el fin de verificar el desempeño de estas mezclas bajo condiciones locales. Los resultados obtenidos permiten establecer un punto de partida para la adopción de esta tecnología en Colombia, contribuyendo a la construcción de una infraestructura vial más segura, durable y eficiente. Tal como lo demuestra su uso exitoso en otros países, la implementación de mezclas SMA podría representar una solución efectiva para capas de rodadura en vías sometidas a altos requerimientos técnicos, mejorando la estabilidad a altas temperaturas, la resistencia al desgaste, el comportamiento estructural y la seguridad frente al deslizamiento, lo cual se traduce en una reducción del índice de accidentalidad y en la generación de corredores viales más seguros y sostenibles. dc.description.abstract | Under the traffic, climatic, geographic, and economic conditions that characterize Colombia, the country's primary road network shows low durability, where flexible pavements with dense asphalt mixtures are predominant and often fail to meet operational demands. These dense asphalt mixtures not only have a limited service life but also present shortcomings in terms of road safety, contributing to a high accident rate, especially under critical precipitation conditions. In the international context, alternatives such as Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) mixtures with a granular support matrix have been developed and applied. Due to their open-graded aggregate structure and high mechanical performance, these mixtures could improve the durability and safety of pavements in Colombia, offering a more effective solution under the country’s high-load and challenging climate conditions. This study analyzed the technology of Granular Support Matrix Mixtures (MAMGS), considering three SMA gradations (19 mm, 12.5 mm, and 9.5 mm). Aggregates, asphalt, and fibers suitable for road use were supplied by a local production plant. Material characterization tests and mechanical performance evaluations were carried out, including Marshall stability and flow, rutting resistance, moisture susceptibility, and binder draindown, in order to evaluate the performance of these mixtures using Colombian materials. This work serves as a first step toward the appropriate adoption of this technology, aiming to contribute to safer infrastructure and a substantial reduction in road accidents—benefits that have already been demonstrated in other countries. Its implementation would provide Colombia with a new alternative for wearing courses under demanding technical conditions, offering greater stability at high temperatures, resistance to wear, mechanical strength, and skid resistance.
