The present investigation characterized the geology of the Caicedo Vulcanites unit, located on the eastern edge of the Western Cordillera of Colombia, between the municipalities of Caicedo and Anzá. During the characterization, a 1:25,000 scale geologic mapping was made, a stratigraphic column segment was raised, petrographic and geochemical techniques were applied (total rock and pyroxene mineral chemistry), SEM-BS and SEMCL zircon images were analyzed, and LA-ICP-MS U-Pb zircon data were made. From the analytical results it was possible to establish that the rocks that make up the Caicedo Vulcanites are chemically and geochronologically different from the Barroso Formation. The rocks correspond mainly to hyaloclastites, formed by underwater volcanic events that took place during the Paleogene in an accreted block of the CLIP to the Andean Block. The chemical results show an alteration related to the interaction of the rocks when they came into contact with seawater. Trace element and rare earth analysis show that the representative rocks of the unit have geochemical characteristics of volcanic arc rocks. Mineral chemistry analysis of pyroxenes shows that they are less differentiated (more primitive) than the Barroso Formation; additionally, it suggests that the pyroxenes of the unit crystallized in a single stage, while those of the Barroso Formation crystallized in more than one stage. The abundant inherited ages found, ranging from the Cretaceous to the Mesoproterozoic, show that the Jurassic ages previously published by other authors for the unit correspond to inherited ages and not to crystallization ages. SEM-BS image analyses show remarkable morphological differences in zircons representative of different ages. The results found in this research, evidence the presence of a Paleogene volcanic arc on the eastern edge of the Western Cordillera that was not known. This way, five magmatic arc belts are recognized in the Colombian West and Central Cordillera, which from West to East are San Blas Complex (Acandí Batholith and associated volcanic rocks), SW Complex (Timbiquí Complex), Santa Cecilia La Equis Complex, Caicedo Vulcanites and the Paleogene units of the Central Cordillera. The proposed model incorporates the possibility VI II Vulcanitas de Caicedo: Evidencia de un vulcanismo Paleógeno en el borde oriental de la Cordillera Occidental of a flat slab type subduction of the CLIP under the Andean Block to explain the occurrence of magmatism in the same period both in the eastern edge of the Western Cordillera and in the Central Cordillera, with a current separation of approximately 100 km. These results demand the revision of the existing evolutionary geological models for the Colombian West.eng
