Since the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, accelerated changes have emerged in the world of work. Health workers, considered the most exposed working population, faced great challenges during the health emergency, which included the prolonged use of personal protective equipment; the use of face masks generated an impact and effects on health personnel, and the purpose of this research was to determine what these effects were through a systematic exploratory review of scientific literature. 3,100 records were retrieved from the selected databases and after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 41 articles were included for full reading. When evaluating and analyzing the evidence, it was found that facial skin conditions, such as “maskne”, allergies, pressure injuries and changes in physiological parameters such as breathing, and heart rate are the main effects of the use of face masks. Other effects such as stress, headaches, fatigue, general malaise and discomfort are also documented, as well as dry eyes and changes in the acoustic parameters of the voice, in addition to an impact on quality of life. The female population is where these effects are most found, and the working population with the greatest impact belongs to the nursing profession. Among the other types of masks referenced in the studies are the N95 type mask and the FFP2 and FFP3 type masks, whose protective factors tend to be more complex and therefore, the effects of the use of these more specialized devices tend to generate a more significant and adverse impact on health workers. It is expected that this research will be a contribution to the area of safety and health at work, in favor of making sound decisions for the care and well-being of health workers. | eng |
