Los resultados constituyen a la línea base de riqueza de algas en Serranilla y Bajo Nuevo, evidencian la necesidad de continuar las investigaciones taxonómicas y ecológicas en la zona norte de la Reserva y resaltan el valor de sus ecosistemas como áreas prioritarias para su conservación. dc.description.abstractThe diversity of macroalgae in the northern zone of the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve has been poorly documented, with previous records limited to 86 taxa from the Serranilla and Bajo Nuevo cays, of which only 34 and 11 were identified to species level in Serranilla and Bajo Nuevo, respectively. This study aimed to expand knowledge of macroalgal richness in these areas through SCUBA-based sampling conducted in Serranilla (2017) and Bajo Nuevo (2021). A total of 207 taxa were identified, distributed across 4 phyla, 45 families, and 96 genera. Among the most notable findings, Chrysymenia kaernbachii Grunow represents a new record for the Atlantic Ocean, 23 species are newly recorded for Colombia, and 52 species constitute new records for the Reserve, increasing its documented diversity by 13.3%. Furthermore, a baseline inventory was established, compiling a total of 175 species for Serranilla and 135 for Bajo Nuevo. Additionally, 14 morphotypes showed no correspondence with previously described taxa, suggesting the possible presence of species unknown to science. Species composition differed between the two localities, likely influenced by environmental factors and the temporal scale of sampling. These results contribute to establishing a baseline of macroalgal richness for Serranilla and Bajo Nuevo, highlight the need for continued taxonomic and ecological research in the northern zone of the Reserve, and underscore the value of these ecosystems as priority areas for conservation.eng
