De Prusia a la cuenca del río Magdalena: La tradición clásica fecundada por el trópico en la arquitectura de Leopoldo Rother

Abstract

Este trabajo se acerca a la obra del arquitecto Leopoldo Rother, para explicar las claves de su orden, entender sus orígenes en la historia de la disciplina y hacer visible su relación con los principios que recibió durante su formación en las escuelas técnicas superiores de Karlsruhe y Berlín y con el clima cultural y político de la Alemania y la Europa Central de los años de su juventud y de sus primeros pasos como arquitecto. Confirma el cambio que a partir de 1945 se produjo en el quehacer creativo del arquitecto alemán, precisando la naturaleza de las transformaciones y verificando, a su lado, la permanencia de los principios de composición adquiridos en su educación. A través del análisis de obras seleccionadas, la tesis reflexiona sobre su potencial para encontrar en la memoria y en la historia la inspiración del proyecto de arquitectura, sirviéndose de las herramientas de la analogía y la composición. Se indaga en la energía poética del método politécnico, tanto al encarar el paisaje y el clima como al aceptar el acervo de obras que influye sobre quien proyecta, esbozando en este caso el papel jugado por el catálogo de la exposición Brazil Builds, colgada en el MOMA de Nueva York en 1943. Concluye señalando la vigencia del método para la enseñanza y la práctica de la arquitectura de nuestro tiempo, cuando la responsabilidad de la construcción y el desarrollo urbano frente la crisis ambiental impone a la arquitectura retos inaplazables. This is a thesis about the work of the architect Leopoldo Rother, to explain the keys of its structure, understand its origins in the history of the discipline and make visible its relationship with the principles he received during his training in the higher technical schools of Karlsruhe and Berlin and the cultural and political climate of Germany and Central Europe in the years of his youth and his first steps as an architect. It confirms the change that began in 1945 in the creative work of the German architect, specifying the nature of the transformations and verifying the permanence of the principles of composition acquired in his education. Through the analysis of selected works, the thesis reflects on the potential of these principles to find in memory and history the inspiration for the architectural project, using the tools of analogy and composition. The poetic energy of the polytechnic method is explored, both when facing the landscape and the climate and when accepting the stock of works that influence the designer, in this case outlining the role played by the catalog of the exhibition Brazil Builds, hanging on the MOMA of New York in 1943. It concludes by pointing out the validity of the method for the current teaching and practice of architecture, when the responsibility of construction and urban development in the face of the environmental crisis imposes irreplaceable challenges on architecture.
