Conclusión La mayoría de los pacientes que acudieron a valoración preanestésica reconocieron al anestesiólogo como un médico especialista, sin embargo, un porcentaje importante desconoce el nivel educativo requerido para adquirir esta formación. dc.description.abstractBackground Anesthesiology is an area of knowledge that most patients have little knowledge of, on many occasions they are unaware of the importance of this branch in the medical-surgical act. During the pre-anesthetic evaluation, the anesthesiologist-patient relationship must be established, explaining what the anesthetic act consists of, answering questions and optimizing the patient's clinical status. Objective. To know the perception of patients about the pre-anesthetic assessment and the role of the anesthesiologist in a level III hospital in the city of Bogotá. Materials and methods It is a descriptive study. Through self-completed surveys, demographic variables were explored, the perception of patients regarding the role of the anesthesiologist and the preanesthetic assessment were investigated. The surveys were completed at the end of the pre-anesthetic assessment, incomplete records were excluded. Results 173 complete surveys were obtained, mostly women residing in Bogotá, with a high school academic level within the most frequent sociodemographic variables. It was found that the female gender significantly influences the knowledge of the objective of the pre-anesthetic assessment and its usefulness, behaving as a predictive factor with an OR of 5.66 (95% CI 1.66-19.24; p=0.005). Similarly, it was found that most patients knew the role of the anesthesiologist. conclusion Most of the patients who attended a pre-anesthetic evaluation recognized the anesthesiologist as a medical specialist, however, a significant percentage does not know the educational level required to acquire this training.eng
