This document presents the kinetic study in the production of triethyl citrate and tri-1-butyl citrate production via esterification of citric acid. Initially, it is described the current and potential use of these citrates in several industrial applications, particularly in the PVC industry. Afterwards, a kinetic study of the esterification reaction of citric acid with ethanol and 1-butanol using methanesulfonic acid and ion exchange Amberlyst 70™ as catalyst was developed. In this study, the temperature, the feed molar ratio of acid/alcohol and the catalyst concentration in the reactive mixture were used as process variables. Based upon experimental results, a set of parameters for a pseudo-homogeneous model were regressed, and the model agrees well with experiments. Finally, a batch reactor model for production of tri-1-butyl citrate was developed and validated with industry scale data.spa
