| spa |
dc.description.abstract | Artificial reefs present a potential solution to address the critical issues of biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation. This research seeks to understand the factors influencing fish diversity in two Caribbean Colombian artificial reef systems, focusing on structural complexity, development time, location, and environmental conditions. It employed hierarchical generalized additive models to examine the response of three diversity metrics to various environmental, spatial, and temporal covariates at different levels of reef complexity. Between 2008 and 2017, a total of 138 fish species were recorded, 93 in Morrosquillo and 104 in Pozos Colorados. The diversity trajectory displayed both linear and irregular patterns, with positive and negative trends, as well as interactions, depending on the specific metrics and covariates analyzed. These trends were influenced by several key factors: 1) location relative to the diversity source, 2) ecological mechanisms associated with design, structural complexity, and succession, 3) spatial configuration, 4) temperature and pH variation, and 5) environmental disturbances. The magnitude, sign, and shape of the diversity response varied across fine, patch, and local scales. Notably, the response did not depend primarily on habitat heterogeneity, as environmental variability and stressors mitigated its effects at specific spatial levels. Artificial reefs can effectively provide ecological requirements for fish; however, optimizing their functionality necessitates a deeper understanding of their performance within the complex marine environment. | eng |
