Resumen
El trabajo analiza el crecimiento económico regional experimentado en Cundinamarca durante el siglo XX como consecuencia de la construcción del Ferrocarril de Girardot. A través de un análisis cuantitativo de la carga del ferrocarril evidenciado en informes de la empresa, y contabilidad de tanto la empresa inglesa The Colombian National Railway Company y el Ferrocarril de Girardot bajo gestión gubernamental a partir de 1921, se explora el impacto económico del ferrocarril. El impacto se compara con experiencias en otros países latinoamericanos y otras regiones del mundo, para establecer el carácter de la experiencia ferroviaria en Colombia de perspectiva internacional.
Abstract. This study analyses the regional economic growth experienced in Cundinamarca during the period 1911 – 1930 as a consequence of the construction of the Girardot Railway. The economic impact of the railway is explored through the quantitative analysis of the freight movements of the railway found in the reports and accounting records of both the British Company: The Colombian National Railway, and the Girardot Railway under governmental administration after 1921. The economic impact of the railway is compared with other experiences in Latin American countries, as well as in other regions of the world, in order to establish the character of the experience of railways in Colombia from an international perspective.
