Resumen
Esta investigación analiza las dinámicas de la manumisión legal de los negros esclavizados en la Provincia de Antioquia y la búsqueda de espacios independientes de sus amos durante los últimos años del periodo colonial y el comienzo del republicano. Para establecer estas dinámicas se analizaron cartas de libertad por compra y gracia, pleitos judiciales, así como ordenanzas, leyes, decretos y censos. En primera instancia se presenta un contexto histórico sobre las condiciones legales, económicas y sociales de la Provincia que permitieron a los esclavos buscar la libertad. Luego, se hace un análisis de las dinámicas de manumisión en Antioquia a partir de la agencia de los esclavos en la consecución de la libertad y de los recursos que usaron para obtenerla. Finalmente se hace un análisis de las relaciones matrimoniales, amorosas y sexuales como búsqueda de un espacio enajenado del poder de los amos.
Abstract: This study investigated the dynamics of the legal manumission of black slaves in the Province of Antioquia and the pursuit of independent spaces out of the reach of their masters during the late colonial period and early republican. In order to establish the dynamics of legal manumission through the agency of the slaves, letters of freedom by purchase and by grace, lawsuits, ordinances, laws, and decrees were analyzed. First, a historical context is described to help the reader understand the legal, economic and social conditions of the Province that enabled slaves to pursuit freedom. Then, a review of the dynamics of manumission in Antioquia is presented, emphasizing in the slaves’ agency in achieving freedom and the use of the legal resources which they had access to. Finally, it is presented a critical examination of marriage, love and sex relations as tactics used by the slaves in order to establish an independent space from the slaveholders.
