Abstract. This thesis presents the findings of an in-depth conversation with Augusto Monterroso’s work. Through a study of his work and the critical bibliography on Monterroso, I have pinpointed certain keys for reading the Guatemalan writer that have not been previously discussed. Among these keys are: antibinary thinking, certain specific rhetorical devices, the role of space in the writer’s oeuvre and the function of description. Taken together, these aspects form the foundation for demonstrating the unity of Monterroso’s work. That is, Monterroso’s work displays a unity whose primary thrust is to show how literary style undermines the distinction between literature and life, thereby framing the former as a map for doing good in the latter. Keywords: ethics, aesthetics, Augusto Monterroso, anti-binary, joyful complexity
