Resumen
Abstract
In this final master thesis, the finite element method was implemented to study the in fluence of a pile subjected to lateral load on adjacent piles in a group. For this purpose,
the incidence of the position of a pile within a group on shear forces, bending moments
and soil reaction forces was evaluated. The models were assembled in such a way that the
piles could be studied as three-dimensional volumetric elements and their interaction with
a sandy foundation soil was simulated. In addition, adaptations to the models were im plemented that allowed obtaining directly the shear force and bending moment diagrams
of the pile, understood as a one-dimensional beam-type structural element. The analyses
performed are important in the study of reaction systems required for suspension and
cable-stayed bridge cables, retaining structures, offshore platforms or foundation systems
for offshore wind turbines and a number of port works.
It was observed that, in groups of piles joined with a pile cap beam, the laterally loaded
pile shows low reactions since, when working as a group, a good part of the applied load
is distributed in the friction that develops on the vertical faces perimeter to the group
and on the face of the base, as well as on the front of the front piles. It was obtained that,
the soil reaction forces around the piles can be lower than those obtained in an isolated
pile, because shadow or edge effects are present. It was concluded that the interaction
between piles in a group is a function of the pile spacing and the departure angle and is
strongly influenced by the restraint conditions at the pile´s head.
Regarding the use of the finite element program, it was found that the use of this type
of tools implies the implementation of adaptations to the models, in order to achieve an
acceptable degree of plausibility between the results obtained and what is expected from
the system in terms of its real behavior.
