Abstract
This study evaluates the durability of natural asphaltic sandstones from the Picalojo deposit in the Guaviare region, with the aim of determining their suitability as a surface layer material for low-traffic rural roads. The durability assessment involves identifying changes to asphalt sand and its components in three scenarios: reference material in situ, long-term pavement in service and simulated environmental conditions in a laboratory setting.
The methodology includes physical, and mechanical characterization of the asphaltic sandstones and the extracted binder, assessing properties such as penetration, ductility, softening point, and specific gravity. It also includes the petrographic and mechanical characterization of asphalt sands using indirect tensile strength and wear loss tests in a Los Angeles machine (Cantabro) to evaluate the effects of water on mechanical properties.
The results show that the mechanical performance of asphalt sands increases over time due to changes in the bituminous component and cementation processes, which are sometimes provided by the kaolin present in asphalt sandstones. The absence of kaolin in the mineral matrix was found to considerably increase its vulnerability to moisture, which compromises binder-aggregate adhesion under saturated conditions. However, greater mineralogical diversity was shown to improve the mixture's structural stability and climatic adaptability, optimizing its response to loads and humid tropical environments.
