Abstract
This research analyzed the sustainability of artisanal sand and gravel mining in the Sinú River (Montería, Córdoba) from a sociotechnical and humanitarian engineering perspective. The objective was to evaluate the technical, environmental, social, economic, and regulatory dimensions of the activity, identifying tensions and opportunities for its participatory strengthening. The study was conducted through documentary review and the application of 62 structured surveys to artisanal sand miners, workers engaged in manual extraction from the riverbed.
The results show that 74.2% of respondents have been involved in the activity for more than 10 years and 73% have three or more economic dependents, highlighting its structural subsistence character. From an environmental perspective, 66.1% consider that extraction does not significantly affect the river, revealing a gap between local perception and the technical interpretation of impact, which is related to the absence of environmental education and systematic information. Regarding formalization, 93.5% expressed willingness to participate in a process supported by technical and legal assistance, suggesting that informality is driven more by structural barriers than by a lack of willingness.
It is concluded that artisanal mining in the Sinú River constitutes a territorially situated sociotechnical system whose sustainability depends on strengthening participatory governance, occupational safety, and institutional coordination
