Abstract
The series of double perovskites RCaFeCoO_6 (R = Nd, Sm, Eu, Dy and Tb) was synthesized by the combustion method and characterized in terms of crystal structure, microstructure, and optical, electrical, and magnetic properties, complemented by first-principles calculations. From X-ray diffraction data and Rietveld refinements, two structural families associated with the effective degree of ordering at the B site were identified: an ordered P2_1/n phase and a disordered Pbnm phase. Upon varying R^(3+) a marked evolution of the B–O–B angle (from 156° to 146°) and A–O distances (from 2.69 Å to 2.67 Å) was observed, whereas the B–O distances remained approximately constant within experimental scatter. Electron microscopy revealed a combustion-typical microstructure, with fine granularity and appreciable porosity; SEM/EDS analysis was consistent with the nominal stoichiometry.
Optical diffuse-reflectance analysis (Kubelka–Munk/Tauc) yielded optical energies in the 1–1.2 eV range correlated with structural distortion. In addition, narrow bands associated with intra-4f transitions of R^(3+)were observed in the 1.4 – 1.6 eV range, overlaid on the absorption edge. Electrical transport confirmed a semiconducting behavior and was effectively described by three-dimensional variable-range hopping (3D VRH) in the 200–310 K interval. The room-temperature J-E curves exhibited weak nonlinearity, with α between 1–1.4, consistent with intergranular barriers. Alternatively, the effective hopping energy at room temperature is on the order of 10–80 meV, supporting localized-states transport. Magnetically, no clear saturation was observed up to ±10 kOe and ZFC–FC irreversibility was identified, attributable to Fe/Co disorder and octahedral distortions (with a dominant paramagnetic contribution in Tb). Finally, DFT for Nd predicts a half-metallic state, with one metallic channel and a gap of ~1.03 eV in the opposite channel, establishing an ideal limit to discuss the impact of disorder and microstructure on the experimental response.
