dc.description.abstract | Tourism represents a fundamental component of travel, offering a wide range of experiences from historical and cultural tours to nature adventures and ecotourism. Each tourism route showcases a range of attractions that allow travellers to discover new destinations and enjoy exciting activities. As travel patterns and consumer demands evolve, tourism routes have adapted to meet these changing needs. In particular, there has been a growing interest in sustainable and responsible tourism in recent years, which has spurred the creation of routes focused on environmental conservation and local development. The proliferation of information and communication technologies has led to the emergence of new forms of tourism, such as virtual and experiential tourism, revolutionising the way tourists interact with tourist destinations. Despite the abundance of existing literature and documentation on this topic and the growing interest in tourist routes, narrative study analyses remain limited, perhaps due to the recent incorporation of tourist routes as a research topic. However, given the growing interest in this form of tourism, it is imperative to conduct thorough and meticulous analyses that explore its attributes and trends in depth. To this end, this research paper aims to address this gap through a bibliometric analysis of recent academic papers on customised tourism routes. For this purpose, the Web-of-Science (WoS) and Scopus databases were used as sources of information, from which papers on tourist routes were selected (search equation and parameters are presented below) in the periods available in both databases: for WoS, the available papers date from the period 2000 - 2022; for Scopus, the available papers are in the period between 1937 and 2022). Subsequently, a scientific mapping was carried out, together with the construction of a theoretical framework using the Tree of Science algorithm to elaborate a literary narrative. This paper is part of the research project ‘Proposal for sustainability based on the analysis of socio-ecological conflicts in the use of tourism in the Condor Route (Villamaría, Caldas)’, funded by the Faculty of Administration of the National University of Colombia, Manizales. As a fundamental initiative for community-based research for the development of tourism destinations, it is crucial to assess the use of ecological and cultural resources, as well as the participation and responsibilities of each of the actors involved. It is also essential to analyse the interactions between human beings and their environment, the results derived from the exploitation of these resources and the equitable and responsible distribution of benefits, using tourism as a productive strategy. This comprehensive assessment will allow not only for sustainable tourism development, but also for the strengthening of the social and economic fabric of the host communities. Finally, this research work is structured in four parts: The first part explains the methodology for the search, selection, processing and analysis of the documents. The second part presents the results obtained from the bibliometric analysis and the intellectual structure of knowledge, including the 407 selected documents. The third part offers an analysis based on co-occurrence analysis of authors' keywords to provide a current and future overview of tourism route studies. The fourth part proposes a theoretical narrative structured through the tree analogy (root, trunk, leaves) on the topic of tourism routes, including conceptualisation, typologies of tourism and tourism routes, issues and challenges, as well as the role of tourism routes in aspects such as sustainable development and their contribution to economic growth in developing regions. Finally, the conclusions and discussion of the paper are presented. | eng |
