In this context, marine algae from the Colombian Caribbean are a promising source of natural cosmetic ingredients. In this work the extraction of the brown seaweed Dictyopteris justii was optimized by ultrasound-assisted extraction, achieving a total florotannin content of 2,874 ± 0,069 mg PGE/g dry extract. The optimized extract exhibited in vitro tyrosinase enzyme inhibition (IC50 = 0,51 mg/mL), suggesting its potential use in depigmenting cosmetics. For its vehiculization, a Pickering emulsion delivery system, consisting of an emulsion stabilized by solid particles instead of surfactants, was proposed. TPP cross-linked chitosan particles were prepared for use as Pickering emulsion stabilizers, which had a wettability of 86,19 ± 1,06°, a size of 129,25 ± 13,83 nm and a zeta potential of 44,7 ± 1,1 mV. Finally, a Pickering emulsion was obtained using medium-chain triglycerides as the oil phase (containing the D. justii extract), the chitosan-TPP particles and xanthan gum as a gelling agent. This emulsion proved to be a promising system for topical application of depigmenting ingredients because it was preferentially retained in the stratum corneum of pig skin and had the ability to permeate into deeper layers of the epidermis, where melanocytes are located.eng
