This dissertation argues that the project of a theory of meaning, as proposed by Donald Davidson in his influential essay “Truth and Meaning”, is based on at least two questionable assumptions about language: on the one hand, the principle of compositionality (articulated with arguments about language learnability and productivity of linguistic use) and, on the other hand, the idea (of presumed Fregean roots) according to which, by stating the references of the terms and sentences of a language, their senses are shown indirectly. This second presupposition is called “preeminence of reference”. The thesis presents, then, a critical approach to the principle of compositionality and, above all, to the presupposition of the preeminence of reference adopted by the advocates of the truth-conditional theories of meaning that Michael Dummett characterized as “modest”. Regarding the latter assumption, it is argued that, in the context of an interpretive theory of meaning, assuming the preeminence of reference implies adopting certain ontological commitments that may entail ethnocentric biases, through which is not possible to account for how a theory of meaning is a theory of understanding. | eng |
