| spa |
| dc.description.abstract | This thesis presents an analysis of the need for and the consequences of distinguishing between the normal use and the thoughtful use of language in order to adequately respond to the “Augustinian phenomenon” and to explore its relationship with the notion of understanding. By examining some classic distinctions in the Anglo-Saxon tradition — knowing-that/knowing-how and explicit/implicit knowledge — which aim to explain the relationship between a speaker’s understanding and their linguistic competence, we conclude that these distinctions are insufficient to account for what it means to understand a language. To characterize this distinction, we offer a reading of Hannah Arendt’s conception of language and its relation to understanding by identifying the characteristic speakers of each use. In developing this distinction, we find reasons to consider thoughtfulness as a virtue with implications in both moral and political domains. | eng |
