dc.description.abstract | This study provides a methodological and methodical interpretation of the first three chapters of Book VII of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics. By this interpretation is meant one that focuses primarily on the passages in which Aristotle states what his investigative procedure is or will be, and on the passages in which he is presumably following this stated procedure. The work examines the relationship between the investigative method outlined in Chapter 1 and Aristotle’s investigative practice in Chapters 1–3, focusing on methodological, methodical, and structural elements. A rigorous analysis of these chapters determines how Aristotle employs this method to investigate the relationship between specific character dispositions (héxeis, incontinence, continence, softness, endurance, vice, and virtue). The study demonstrates that these chapters are intricately and meticulously organized around methodological considerations. It reveals that Aristotle already possesses the definitions of at least incontinence and continence as foundational starting points (archai) for the inquiry, which he employs alongside the method to examine a set of opinions concerning the essential characteristics of these dispositions and the relationship between these dispositions. The work analyzes the rules of the method, concluding that it involves: (1) compiling reputable opinions (endóxa) and (2) formulating and resolving aporiai (puzzles) about these opinions to confirm or reject them. The investigation concludes that there is complete coherence between Aristotle’s methodological guidelines and his investigative practice in these chapters, offering a significant contribution to understanding Aristotelian methodology and its practical application. dc.description.abstract | Esta investigación ofrece una interpretación metodológica y metódica de los tres primeros capítulos del Libro VII de la Ética Nicomáquea de Aristóteles. Entiéndase por esta interpretación una que hace énfasis principalmente en los pasajes en que Aristóteles declara cuál es o será su proceder investigativo, y en los pasajes en los que presuntamente sigue este declarado proceder. El trabajo examina la relación entre el método de investigación expuesto en el Capítulo 1 y la práctica investigativa de Aristóteles en los Capítulos 1–3, centrándose en aspectos metodológicos, metódicos y estructurales. Se realiza un análisis riguroso de estos capítulos para determinar cómo Aristóteles emplea este método en el marco de su investigación sobre la relación entre ciertas disposiciones del carácter (héxeis, incontinencia, continencia, blandura, resistencia, vicio y virtud). La investigación demuestra que estos capítulos están compleja y meticulosamente organizados en torno a aspectos metodológicos, revela que Aristóteles ya posee las definiciones de al menos la incontinencia y la continencia como puntos de partida (archai) para la investigación, y que las utiliza junto con el método para examinar un conjunto de opiniones que versan sobre características esenciales de esas disposiciones, y sobre la relación que guardan entre sí estas disposiciones. El trabajo analiza las reglas del método, determinando que consiste en: (1) recopilar opiniones reputadas (endóxa) y (2) formular y resolver aporías sobre estas opiniones, para confirmarlas o rechazarlas. La investigación concluye que existe una completa coherencia entre las directrices metodológicas de Aristóteles y su práctica investigativa en estos capítulos, contribuyendo significativamente a la comprensión del método aristotélico y su aplicación.
