dc.description.abstract | In the philosophy of mind there is the question whether it is possible to reduce or always explain all our spatial thinking in terms of egocentric spatial thinking, or whether there are forms of spatial thinking that resist such reduction. In this dissertation, I attempt to provide an answer to this question. To do so, I examine different types of spatial thoughts. These are the thoughts based on egocentric concepts (‘left’, ‘right’, ‘above’, ‘below’, ‘in front of’, ‘behind’), on topological concepts (‘near’, ‘far’, ‘before’, ‘after’, ‘over’ and ‘under’), and on absolute concepts (‘north’, ‘south’, ‘east’, ‘west’, ‘uphill’, ‘downhill’, ‘seawards’ and ‘landwards’). Throughout this examination, I face two more specific questions. First, when we think about the location of an object using those concepts, what is that thought about? Second, is there any sense in which we can explain such thought in terms of egocentric spatial thinking? To reflect on these questions, and as a tool for conducting the conceptual analysis, I use the works of linguists of different traditions on the semantics of spatial terms in certain languages. At the end of my inquiry, I conclude that it is no possible to reduce all spatial cognition to egocentric spatial thinking. This is because there are different forms of spatial thinking whose explanation demands a non-egocentric comprehension of space. | eng |
