| spa |
dc.description.abstract | Objective: To evaluate the anthropometric relationships between the length of the hand and the palm on its central axis and the length of the transverse carpal ligament (TCL) and establish a new anthropometric relationship to infer the length of the transverse carpal ligament by surface measurements of the hand. Methodology: Descriptive anatomical study in fresh cadavers, in which the length of the LTC, the length of the hand and the palm in its central axis were measured. The study was carried out at the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences. (Bogotá Colombia). Dissection was done in 30 fresh bodies at the level of the hands bilaterally, to have 60 hands in total. Bodies older than 18 years old, men and women were included. Hands that presented trauma, deformity or scars were excluded. The assessment was made under 3.5X visual magnification and the measurements were taken with digital caliper. Results: The distal flexor wrist crease corresponded to the proximal edge of the TCL in 100% of the cases, the location of the distal edge of the TCL was found in 1/4 of the palm length, the caution limit for TCL release was found in 1/5 of the length of the hand and the proximal release should be at least 11 mm at the level of the flexor retinaculum in the forearm. Conclusions: The anatomical knowledge of the surface repairs of the hand allows establishing a new anthropometric relationship to infer the length of the TCL, which would facilitate the carpal tunnel decompression techniques. | spa |
