Since the traditional macroscopic methods of forensic anthropology, which define certain alterations as peri mortem, can only be limited to the physical-chemical properties of the bone and the biomechanics that result from it, such methods are unable to diagnose with certainty whether these alterations correspond to vital injuries (occurred before the death of the individual) and much less to estimate the time elapsed between the occurrence of the injury and the death of the person. There is then a need to integrate an approach to the scale at which the immediate and early cellular processes associated with a traumatic injury are triggered, that is, the vital reaction. This approach is offered by the disciplinary approach of Human Morphology, which studies the form and components of the human body from three interrelated points of view: macroscopic anatomy, developmental anatomy and also the microscopic perspective. This latter perspective on the examination of bone trauma is potentially feasible through the application of histological and immunohistochemical techniques specific to histopathology for the detection of characteristic indicators of vital reaction in tissue microstructure, which could complement macroscopic/biomechanical assessments and contribute to the resolution of problems associated with determining fracture vitality and Post-Traumatic Time Interval (survival time). Thus, the present investigation corresponds to a qualitative case study of two samples of macroscopically peri-mortem bone fractures from a skeletonized child who was buried between 1850 and 1950, in order to evaluate the usefulness and effectiveness of histopathological techniques in the diagnosis of vital reaction and survival time in peri-mortem bone lesions of skeletonized remains. These techniques reaffirm the potential of histology in the assessment of bone microstructure and demonstrate the good effectiveness of histopathological techniques in detecting characteristics of the early vital reaction in bone tissue injuries and provide elements to estimate the post-traumatic time interval elapsed.eng
