The surgical permanent method of family planning or female sterilization, is a permanent contraceptive that can generate changes in health; despite being the preferred method by Colombian women, little has been addressed about the experiences around it. Objective: To describe the experiences of women in Bogotá-Colombia, around the implementation of the permanent surgical method of family planning (before, during and after). Materials and Methods: Descriptive qualitative research; the information was collected through semi-structured interviews, recorded, transcribed and subjected to content analysis. Results: Twelve women who had different experiences from their approach to surgical contraception until several years after its implementation participated. These experiences were grouped according to the moments explored: in the “before”, women approached the method because of the need to adopt a good contraceptive; both personal and contextual aspects influenced their decision making. In the “during”, the experiences differed according to the time of the procedure (postpartum or interval). In the “after”: women perceived changes in their health after the implementation of the method. Discussion: Candidates access the method with confidence because they consider it the best of all contraceptives; with the passage of time, they recognize that they accessed it without sufficient information to make a truly informed choice. Conclusion: Women's experiences with the permanent surgical method of family planning demonstrate the need to strengthen specific education on the method and the approach to women as holistic beings.eng
