| dc.description.abstract | Nuclear techniques are being used to detect or locate Improvised Explosive Devices (IED). One of these techniques is the Thermal Neutron Backscattering in which fast neutrons from an isotopic source impinge on a chosen volume of soil where the IED is suspected to be found. The low Z nuclei of the IED thermalize the neutrons more effectively than the average surronding soil and because of this fact, when a scan over the surface of the soil is carried out, a higher intensity of backscattered neutrons will indicate the horizontal location of the explosive. We use a 252 Cf source placed in the middle between two detectors of slow neutron detectors. We have studied the ability of location as a function of a number of parameters that decide the intensity of the signal like number of detectors on each array, distance between the arrays, humidity and type of soil and depth at which the IED is planted. Because in practical situations it is important to minimize size, weight and total power consumption of a portable locating device, the case of only one detector per array placed at the three shortest posible distance between them is of high importance. | spa |
| dc.description.abstract | Las técnicas nucleares se pueden utilizar para detectar o localizar Artefactos Explosivos Improvisados (AEI). La técnica de Retrodispersión de Neutrones Térmicos (RNT) consiste en usar los neutrones rápidos emitidos por una fuente isotópica que inciden en un volumen de suelo elegido donde se sospecha que el AEI es encontrado. Los núcleos de bajo número atómico (Z) del AEI termalizan los neutrones más efectivamente que la media del suelo circundante y debido a este hecho cuando se realiza una exploración sobre la superficie del suelo la intensidad de los neutrones retrodispersados puede ubicar la localización del explosivo. Utilizando una fuente 252 Cf colocada entre dos detectores de neutrones lentos se estudia la capacidad de localización en función de parámetros que inciden en la intensidad de la señal como la distancia entre arreglos y la profundidad a la cual se plantó el AEI, en la presente investigación se muestra el análisis de un sólo detector por arreglo colocado a las tres únicas distancias posibles. | spa |
