Género, afectos y política: Lauren Berlant y la irrupción de un dilema

Abstract

El presente estudio crítico tiene como objetivo entonces tomar como punto de partida la publicación en castellano del libro de una de sus teóricas más relevantes para así evaluar los alcances y paradojas de una tradición que ha llegado para enriquecer más de un debate. Se trata de El corazón de la nación de Lauren Berlant (n.1957), un texto breve que resume con claridad los ejes aquí en disputa. Allí, a través de tres artículos, Berlant despliega su hipótesis central: los afectos son elementos clave a la hora de evaluar la política pero, así como en algunos casos pueden devenir en transformadores, en otros no hacen más que refrendar el statu quo. Nuestro recorrido entonces estará marcado por los siguientes pasos: a) una presentación del giro afectivo: sus antecedentes dentro de la teoría de género y sus dos variantes fundamentales. b) el modo en que Berlant —que encarna una de las dos corrientes— pone en escena tanto las virtudes como algunos de los problemas del giro en cuestión. c) finalmente sugeriremos algunas de las áreas sobre las que el giro está teniendo un importante impacto. Allí quedará en evidencia que el giro afectivo está comprometido con la continuación de algunas de las premisas del posestructuralismo y también con la extensión de esta lógica hacia la dimensión material.

The present critical study aims to take as a starting point the publication in Spanish of the book by one of its most relevant theorists in order to evaluate the scope and paradoxes of a tradition that has come to enrich more than one debate. It is The Heart of the Nation by Lauren Berlant (b.1957), a brief text that clearly summarizes the axes under dispute here. There, through three articles, Berlant unfolds her central hypothesis: affects are key elements when evaluating politics but, just as in some cases they can become transformative, in others they do nothing more than endorse the status quo. Our journey will then be marked by the following steps: a) a presentation of the affective turn: its antecedents within gender theory and its two fundamental variants. b) the way in which Berlant - who embodies one of the two currents - stages both the virtues and some of the problems of the turn in question. c) finally we will suggest some of the areas on which the turn is having an important impact. There it will become clear that the affective turn is committed to the continuation of some of the premises of poststructuralism and also to the extension of this logic into the material dimension.
