Experiencias de cuidado de sí de mujeres cuidadoras con cáncer

Abstract

Históricamente, las mujeres han asumido el rol de cuidadoras de la humanidad. El diagnóstico de cáncer en mujeres mientras desempeñan este rol es un evento creciente y poco estudiado. Existen perspectivas como el autocuidado y el cuidado de sí que pueden dar mayor profundidad al abordaje de las situaciones de cáncer con enfoque de género. Esta integración permite articular el bienestar físico, los procesos reflexivos y transformadores que emergen en contextos de vulnerabilidad.

El objetivo del estudio fue comprender las experiencias de cuidado de sí en mujeres cuidadoras con cáncer. Se utilizó la teoría fundamentada constructivista como enfoque metodológico. La recolección de datos se realizó mediante entrevistas semiestructuradas a nueve mujeres cuidadoras diagnosticadas con cáncer. El análisis siguió el proceso de codificación propuesto por Kathy Charmaz, asegurando el rigor y el cumplimiento de las consideraciones éticas propias de la investigación cualitativa.

Como resultado, se construyó la teoría sustantiva denominada: Roles encontrados que me transforman: Ser cuidadora y ser mujer con cáncer, que se compone de tres categorías tituladas, Mi identidad como cuidadora: equilibrando mi deber y mi bienestar, asimilando la nueva realidad en el cuidado y construyendo un nuevo significando del cuidado. Con estos hallazgos se evidencia cómo las mujeres desarrollan estrategias de cuidado de sí, que les permiten afrontar su enfermedad, sin renunciar a su rol de cuidadoras. Esta teoría sustantiva contribuye a enfermería al visibilizar la complejidad de los roles encontrados y su impacto en el bienestar integral, proponiendo una mirada más integral, crítica y transformadora del cuidado propio.

Se concluyó que la experiencia de mujeres cuidadoras – con cáncer MC-CC reta los sistemas de salud por la necesidad de pasar de acciones de autocuidado básicos a un enfoque de emancipación en el cuidado de sí, para sobrellevar el doble rol. (Texto tomado de la fuente)

Historically, women have assumed the role of caregivers of humanity. The diagnosis of cancer in women while they perform this role is a growing yet understudied phenomenon. Perspectives such as self-care and care of the self can deepen the gender-responsive approach to cancer. This integration makes it possible to articulate physical well-being with the reflective and transformative processes that emerge in contexts of vulnerability.

The aim of the study was to understand the experiences of care of the self among women caregivers with cancer. Constructivist grounded theory was used as a methodological approach. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with nine women caregivers diagnosed with cancer. The analysis followed the coding process proposed by Kathy Charmaz, ensuring methodological rigor and adherence to the ethical considerations inherent to qualitative research.

As a result, a substantive theory was constructed, titled: Encountered Roles That Transform Me: Being a Caregiver and Being a Woman with Cancer. It comprises three categories: My identity as a caregiver: balancing duty and well-being, Assimilating the new reality of care, and constructing a new meaning of care. These findings show how women develop strategies of care of the self that allow them to face their illness without relinquishing their caregiving role. This substantive theory contributes to the field of nursing by making visible the complexity of these intersecting roles and their impact on comprehensive well-being, proposing a more holistic, critical, and transformative lens on self-care.

It was concluded that the experience of women caregivers with cancer (WC-WC) challenges health systems, given the need to move from basic self-care actions to an emancipatory approach to care of the self to navigate the dual role.
