Antibiotics are the main treatment, however, the increase in antimicrobial resistance and side effects have aroused interest in the search for other alternatives for its management. Medicinal plants have been studied as a therapeutic alternative for their anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant effects, which is why many investigations have been carried out exploring their use. Despite this, a recent document is needed that synthesizes the results obtained in the studies and evaluates their methodological quality, to guide future research, and in a preliminary way, this therapy. Methodology: Many databases were searched for studies using medicinal plants for the treatment of acne vulgaris up to August 2022. 38 articles with a total of 4.539 participants and 167 different species of medicinal herbs were included. Results: Medicinal plants are effective in the treatment of acne vulgaris, compared to standard treatment or placebo, with some exceptions. Its safety profile is adequate, producing only mild adverse events. Conclusion: Plants or herbal formulas such as Melaleuca alternifolia, Rosmarinus officinalis, among others, are preliminarily an effective and safe alternative or complementary therapy for the management of acne vulgaris of mild or moderate severity.eng
