Bolivar’s portraits: a historiographical state of the art

Abstract

This article reflects about the portrait as a genre based ona selection of allegedly live portraits of Simon Bolívar,also, explores the ways in which they have been analyzedhistorically and offers new hypotheses to interpret themfrom the perspective of cultural history. The second partfocuses on a state of the art or critical assessment of thehistoriographical approaches to Bolivar’s iconography,as a starting point for future approaches.

Este artículo, en primer lugar, realiza una reflexión sobreel retrato como género a partir de una selección deretratos de Simón Bolívar hechos «del natural», indagasobre las formas en que se han analizado históricamenteestas representaciones y ofrece nuevas hipótesis parainterpretarlos desde la historia cultural. La segunda parteapunta al balance crítico de los enfoques historiográficosde la iconografía de Bolívar, punto de partida para futurasaproximaciones a dicho corpus.
