The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) defines hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) as an intervention in which an individual is administered oxygen at 100% concentration, intermittently while in a chamber at pressures greater than 1.0 atmospheres and there are 14 accepted uses for such therapy, including the treatment of thermal burns, gas gangrene, and skin grafts and free flaps. A systematic review was conducted that included the evidence for its use in these 3 indications from the year 2000, 234 articles were identified initially, only 10 of them met the inclusion criteria at the end. The quality of the evidence was evaluated using the Grade methodology with the Grade Pro tool, obtaining as a result moderate evidence with a favorable recommendation for the use of HBOT in the prevention of necrosis in free flaps and skin grafts survival, high quality of evidence without additional benefit in favor of HBOT for the treatment of thermal burns and very low evidence for any type of recommendation in the management of gas gangrene. It is concluded that the evidence in which the use of HBOT is supported comes mostly from studies prior to the dates selected for this systematic review, new adequate methodologically studies are needed to update the evidence and grade of recommendation of HBOT as adjuvant therapy in the 3 clinical scenarios proposed in this review.spa
