The research evaluated the alignment between existing certifications and industry needs, as well as their impact on project performance. Based on competency-based management models and Project Management Institute (PMI) standards, the study followed a qualitative and descriptive approach in four stages: (1) a literature review on project management competencies; (2) interviews with experts and surveys of companies in the sector; (3) correspondence analysis between competencies required by the industry and those certified by PMI; and (4) proposals for competency development in project managers. The results indicated that the profile of project managers focused primarily on personal competencies, followed by cognitive and performance competencies. Although gaps were identified, current certifications covered the most critical competencies. However, the need to complement certification with practical experience, mentoring, and technological tools was evident. This study provided relevant information on the relevance of certifications in the software industry and provided recommendations to strengthen the development of competencies aligned with the sector's demands.eng
