This research aimed to describe the impact perceived by consultees on the communication during psychotherapy, specifically verbal and non-verbal, as a result of therapy being performed in different settings (office, outdoor, or virtual), and how it affects the therapeutic relationship. A qualitative methodology was utilized involving semi-structured interviews with nine consultees from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia's Servicio de Atención Psicológica observing four categories to the analysis: verbal-oral communication, non-verbal communication, the significance of the setting, and the physical characteristics of the setting. It was concluded that privacy level influenced verbal-oral communication and the development of other aspects such as trust within the therapeutic relationship. Factors such as adequate space, lighting and the presence of a window were related to a greater level of physical comfort and prompted the observation of non-verbal signals and showed that it stimulated the display of relevant information and sincerity. Additionally, the significance of each setting influenced the content addressed during the sessions and the openness to talk about them. Finally, in-person therapy sessions were linked with positive impacts such as improved non-verbal communication and a greater sense of being heard by the therapists, while virtual therapy sessions were associated with a heightened sense of empowerment experienced by the consultees in the therapeutic relationship. The advantages and disadvantages of the spaces and the modality of therapy are discussed.eng
