Coral reef ecosystems provide fundamental Ecosystem Services-ES that support and are essential for human wellbeing and biodiversity on oceanic islands, including food provision and coastal protection. However, these ecosystems have been affected by various factors, leading to significant declines in coral cover and its ecological functions. This research explores the relationship between coral reef´s complexity, its ability to provide ES, and its ecological, biological and socio-economic importance in San Andrés Island (SAI). The study presents science-based arguments to encourage investment in reef restoration and protection as essential components of the natural island´s infrastructure and Nature Based Solutions. This research is focused on key ES such as biodiversity refugee for fish, coastal protection, ecological facilitation, and tourism, analyzing their relations with reef´s structural complexity and health. Results indicated that higher structural complexity provides greater refuge for fish, leading to higher fish biomass that could be increased up to 75%, as well as higher diversity, species richness and abundance. It was determined that coral barrier reefs play a crucial role for SAI in protecting coastlines by reducing wave height by up to 90%. Nevertheless, coral degradation threatens this function, reducing wave attenuation to less than 50% as found in Sound Bay area, with negative consequences like erosion. Moreover, using environmental economic valuation methods such as Choice Experiments, this research showed that healthier barrier reefs can boost tourism, by sheltering wider beaches with calmer wave conditions and better fish and coral aesthetic scenarios, which are significantly associated with higher tourist´s willingness to pay, to visit, and to contribute financially SAI´s reefs protection. Through the Contingent Valuation Method, we determined that visitors would contribute up to USD$ 12,775,964 per year toward reef´s conservation efforts. These findings underscore the importance of preserving coral reefs for coastal protection, marine biodiversity, and economic prosperity.eng
