| dc.description.abstract | The aim of this study was to evaluate microvascular density as a measure of angiogenesis and the expression of E-cadherin in canine mammary tumors, establishing the relationship of these parameters with malignancy criteria. To do this, 30 mammary tumors, including hyperplasias, adenomas, and carcinomas, were evaluated. These cases came from the archives of the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory at the National University of Colombia that were analyzed between 2019 and 2023. For each selected case, different variables such as age, reproductive status, type of neoplasia, and degree of malignancy, among others, were considered. All samples underwent histological classification and grading, immunohistochemical techniques using CD31 and E-cadherin antibodies, and microvasculature measurement. For statistical analysis, univariate and bivariate techniques were used, with significance levels set at (p < 0.05). No statistical association was found between the study variables and microvascular density. However, a significant association was established between the type of neoplasia and E-cadherin expression. It was identified that malignant tumors had a general reduction in membranous E-cadherin expression compared to benign lesions (hyperplasia and adenoma). Additionally, a higher intracellular expression of E-cadherin was associated with malignant tumors. These results suggest that malignant mammary tumors do, in fact, undergo an alteration in E-cadherin expression, leading to the acquisition of malignant characteristics. This study highlights the importance of evaluating different markers with diagnostic and prognostic value in future research in order to deepen the understanding of the tumor microenvironment | eng |
