For this reason, it is essential to approach it from a theoretical framework that provides a solid foundation for analyzing the relationship between society and nature. This research proposes a dialogue between energy transition and social metabolism, aiming to understand these processes from a complex systems perspective and in relation to the changes experienced by such systems. Based on a review of previous studies, three methodologies are compared: Human Appropriation of Net Primary Production (HANPP), Material Flow Analysis (MFA), and the Multi-Scale Integrated Analysis of Societal and Ecosystem Metabolism (MuSIASEM). The comparison is developed around five criteria related to the main alternatives for the energy transition, in order to determine which methodology is most suitable. The results indicate that while all three methodologies show a certain degree of applicability, MuSIASEM offers the best fit for analyzing the energy transition. However, its potential can be enhanced through more robust data collection and the inclusion of social variables that broaden the understanding of the phenomenon.eng
