The swine respiratory complex (PRC) refers to a multifactorial disease that arises from a combination of viral, bacterial agents, some management practices and environmental factors. The polymicrobial and polylesional features present a great challenge to diagnose infectious agents involved in a clinical problem which leads to a severe economic loses in Colombia and worldwide. The goal of this work was to characterize the macroscopic pathological lesions and their correlation with the pneumonic patterns observed in the nursery and fattening pigs in an intensive full-cycle farm in our country. Fifty pigs were selected and necropsied, 25 pigs belonged to each productive phase as mentioned above. Lung tissues were taken for histopathology. At least one pneumonic pattern was observed at macroscopic evaluation in all pigs studied. In nursery, the predominant pneumonic pattern was the combination of suppurative bronchopneumonia and interstitial pneumonia. In fattening, the predominant pattern was the combination of interstitial pneumonia and bronchointerstitial. The detected findings showed variability of possible inducing agents, and the severity of the co-infections. These findings are not easily observable and can be confusing at macroscopic evaluation of lungs. Thus, histopathological evaluation is crucial to apporach the first diagnostic approach of PRC. The lesions and their features found may suggest the involvement of agents such as PRRSV, SIV, PCV2, Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, and bacterial agents such as Streptococcus suis, Glaeserella parasuis, Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae. Finally, these findings indicate the need to perform molecular tests for the detection of agents involved and their correlation with lesions to establish a comprehensive final diagnosis.eng
