| spa |
dc.description.abstract | Introduction: Alterations of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis have been described in individuals with prolonged commuting times to their study site. Bogotá, one of the most traffic-congested cities in the world, has lengthy travel times that can affect the quality of life and health of its inhabitants, including university students. Chronic stress, mediated by persistent cortisol secretion, may be influenced by factors such as commuting time and biological sex. The measurement of cortisol in hair allows a retrospective assessment of the accumulation of this hormone and its relationship with prolonged stress. Objective: To determine the relationship between hair cortisol levels, a marker of chronic stress, and the time spent commuting among medical students at the National University of Colombia. Materials and Methods: A quasi-experimental, longitudinal, quantitative, and analytical study was conducted with a population of 40 men and 40 women, all medical students attending courses during the second semester of 2023 at the University Campus. Hair samples were collected at the beginning and end of the semester to evaluate cumulative cortisol levels. Cortisol extraction was performed using methanol, and quantification was done by ELISA. For inferential analysis, ANOVA, Friedman’s test, Student’s t-test, and the Mann-Whitney test were used. Correlation analyses and a regression model were developed to assess the association among variables. Results: The observed trend, although not statistically significant, indicated that as commuting time decreases, hair cortisol concentration tends to decrease as well. While commuting time was not a significant predictor, biological sex appeared to influence cortisol levels, with women exhibiting higher values and greater variability compared to men. Furthermore, a relationship was noted between cortisol levels and adipose tissue distribution, suggesting a potential link between chronic stress and metabolic changes in this population. Conclusions: This is the first study in Colombia to analyze hair cortisol in medical students, highlighting the influence of biological sex on chronic stress response. Although commuting time was not a significant predictor, certain trends suggest its impact on the regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Additionally, the observed relationship between cortisol levels and adipose tissue opens new lines of research on the metabolic effects of chronic stress in academic populations. | eng |
| fra |
