Abstract. Innovation is considered as essential for the competitiveness of firms, regions and countries worldwide. Thus, in the last few decades, use of surveys as a tool for measuring innovation has been increased in all countries. Although great strides have been made in the understanding of innovation in the manufacturing sector, it has not achieved universal consensus in understanding of innovation in services sector since many studies have shown that there are characteristics of the innovation process in services that differ significantly from manufacturing innovation, therefore specialized data capture mechanisms are needed for the tertiary sector. Through this research the Survey Development and Technological Innovation 2008-2009 in services sector is analyzed as an information capture mechanism of innovation in this sector in line with the literature, as its comparison with similar international exercises and results with those of industry. It is concluded that the form of the EDITSII is relevant to the measurement of innovation in the service sector, but it´s modification is necessary to optimize the characterization of processes and interactions of innovation in the services sector in Colombia
