The influence of music therapy program on rheumatoid arthritis pain management was evaluated in older women attending a private medical center in Bogotá, Colombia. Participants were enrolled voluntarily (n=10) and were given music therapy intervention, based on recreational, listening, improvisational and composition methods, over a two-month period. An exploratory, pre-experimental, one group study was performed. Qualitative and quantitative measuring tools were applied before, during, and after treatment. The Escala de Estrategias Coping (EEC-M) (Londoño et al, 2006), (in English, Coping Strategies Scale), was administered to the participants to rate their coping levels, before and after the intervention. This is a standardized psychometric scale validated for the Colombian population. A qualitative analysis was performed throughout every session, evaluating aspects like music and sound performance, emotional expression, and verbal discourse. The results indicate a possible relation between the music therapy program and the increase in the use of coping strategies such as problem solving, positive reappraisal and social support; just as a decrease in the use of coping strategies such as aggressive behavior. It suggests that music therapy enables individuals to adapt successfully to pain events, thanks to the development of coping strategies.eng
