Interpersonal violence is a serious public health issue, with domestic and gender-based violence being a critical expression of this phenom. A connection between domestic violence and companion animal abuse has been established, under the concept of "the link," representing an unexplored expression in the understandings of violence and the role of animals in the "multispecies family." Animal abuse has been linked to domination behaviors within the Western patriarchal structure, particularly in its instrumentalization as an effective and underrecognized form of domestic and gender-based violence. Therefore, animal abuse is one of the many possible expressions of violence, which presents itself as a singular public health problem affecting both human and animal welfare (One Health – One Welfare). Similarly, a lack of understanding of the effects of animal abuse in violence cycles remains common among professionals, highlighting the still incipient visibility of this issue, as well as traditional anthropocentric conceptions of violence and animals in society. Looking for understand this association in the local and Latin American context, a qualitative study is proposed with the aim of identifying and analyzing the relationship between acts of violence against companion animals and interpersonal violence through a case study in the Bogotá city context. As source of information, interviews were conducted with women victims of domestic violence who reported animal abuse by their abuser. The collected information was compiled, analyzed, and categorized into themes and subthemes using thematic analysis, resulting in four main categories: 1) The human-animal relationship in the context of domestic violence, 2) Animal abuse in the relationship and intimate partner violence, 3) Violent and patriarchal contexts, and 4) Implications of animal abuse in seeking institutional help or exit. The information obtained was discussed and theoretically contrasted under three theoretical frameworks: the Link theory, under the anthrozoology, the explanatory contexts of violence, and gender perspectives. Overall results and conclusions, clearly evidencing the importance of companion animals to women victims, as well as a clear association between animal abuse and domestic and gender-based violence. These scenarios often presented in an instrumental and co- occurring manner, frequently within historical contexts of domestic violence and control, often representing a critical turning point for the female victim and a key factor in seeking subsequent help. This research contributes to the conceptual construction of violence as a unique phenomenon in both human and animal public health from a Latin American perspective, with important implications for professionals working with human and animal victims, as well as for the formulation of public policies and institutional frameworks for comprehensive violence care within the multispecies family.eng
