Abstract : This text provides an introduction to the method for the specific case of the analysis of elastic structures. The text is aimed at students of Civil Engineering, for whom is no longer sufficient to study structures composed of bars only, but it is necessary to know the elements of this technique for the solution of problems related to massive structures such as walls , silos, tanks, dams, etc.. The text can be also used for specialized courses in Structures. Given this limited scope, it avoids dealing in the various proposals for elements for each case and examine only those that have been consecrated by the practice. In addition, addressing only the fundamental aspects of this technique and neglects the treatment of more advanced topics, such as the mathematical aspects of the discretization and approximation, the hybrid formulation, the finite element for membranes analysis, etc.. For these and other issues targeted to research in the area, it is recommended that other texts of major scope
